Sivec Marble from Pelagonia: Unique Qualities and Versatile Uses
Pelagonia, a mountainous region in Western Macedonia, is home to one of the world’s largest deposits of white marble, with reserves exceeding 15 million cubic metres. Among these deposits is Sivec marble, renowned for its exceptional aesthetic beauty and unique physical and chemical properties. This marble is widely used in public buildings, private homes, and architectural structures of all scales, both for interior applications and exterior features such as squares, facades, and monuments.
Although Sivec marble has excellent properties, its high level of pulverisation and wear under impact make it unsuitable as a raw material for producing concrete aggregates, asphalt, tamping material, or cover materials. However, this very characteristic is valued in the chemical industry, where Sivec marble is used as a filler in the production of paints, varnishes, adhesives, and other products. Additionally, it is utilised for abrasive cleaning processes and as micronised flour where a dolomite component is required.
